History
In 1962, Ramon "RJ" Jacinto set up a radio station in his backyard with the call letters DZRJ, and it initially broadcast on the AM band at 780 kHz. This became the Philippines' first teenage station. It started a rock and roll revolution, and, was the first to introduce The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, and spawned a way for many Filipino artists. Those were the golden years when rock and roll was born in the Philippines. The radio station continued to build a solid following over the years and is still going strong today!
In 1972, Ramon "RJ" Jacinto's life in the Philippines was interrupted by Martial Law. He was exiled and the station was seized by the government and Alan Austria managed the station in RJ Jacinto's absence. The station was then known as Rock of Manila. It was then that Filipino music flourished. DZRJ's parking lot concerts became a lifestyle and Filipino artists expressed their sentiments through their music.
In 1986, DZRJ AM then manned by Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile defected and under the direction of the late Father James Reuter became the Voice of the Revolution and received the Non-De Guerre Award from former President Cory Aquino.
DZRJ was reformatted to Boss Radio DZRJ 100.3, airing an AOR format, which was similar to the former format where DZRJ-AM essentially left off. In 1998, RJ FM officially launched its nationwide satellite broadcasting, a first in the history of the company to achieve this milestone.
Around July 1999, it was reformatted to The Hive 100.3, playing alternative rock, indie rock & classic rock music. Its format was similar to the defunct RJ Underground Radio 105.9. On September 1, 2002, The Hive finally reformatted to a variety hits format and rebranded it as 100.3 RJFM. It wasn't until 2003, when they began to have live DJs.
Since then, RJFM airs an hour of Beatles music every 5:00 am.
